II. Key Features and Must-See Attractions in Paro
In Paro, you will find many special places, each with its own story and meaning in our Bhutanese culture. These are some of the most important and beautiful sites that we are honored to share with you:
- Paro Taktsang: The Sacred Tiger's Nest Monastery
Perhaps the most famous and cherished place in Bhutan is Paro Taktsang, or as many know it, Tiger's Nest Monastery. It is truly a breathtaking sight, how it sits so high on the cliff, overlooking our valley. This is not just a beautiful place to see, but a deeply holy site for us in Bhutan. It is said that Guru Rinpoche, who brought the precious teachings of Buddhism to Bhutan, arrived here flying on the back of a tigress and meditated in this very place. The path to reach Tiger's Nest is a journey in itself, a walk through our forests, with views that become more and more wonderful as you climb higher. To make this pilgrimage is something very special, and we hope you will feel the blessing of this place.
-
Rinpung Dzong: The Heart of Paro Valley
Looking down upon Paro valley, you will see the majestic Rinpung Dzong, which we call "Fortress of Heaped Jewels." This Dzong is very important to Paro and to Bhutan. It is a beautiful example of our Bhutanese art and architecture, with its strong white walls and the many intricate carvings in wood. Built long ago, in the 15th century, Rinpung Dzong has always been both a place of strength and a place of spiritual learning for monks. When you walk within its walls, you are walking through our history. From the Dzong, the view of Paro valley is truly something special, a panorama of our beautiful land.
-
Kyichu Lhakhang: An Ancient Place of Peace
For a feeling of deep peace, we invite you to visit Kyichu Lhakhang, one of the oldest and most sacred temples in Bhutan. It is said to have been built in the 7th century, a very long time ago, to help spread Buddhism in our land. When you enter Kyichu Lhakhang, you will feel a special tranquility. The gardens around the temple are also very peaceful and lovely. Inside, you will find ancient and precious objects and a feeling of our long spiritual history. It is a place for quiet reflection and to feel the heart of Bhutanese Buddhism.
-
Drukgyel Dzong Ruins: Whispers of Our Past, Views of the Mountains
If you travel to the upper part of Paro valley, you will find Drukgyel Dzong. Today, it stands in ruins, but even in this state, it speaks strongly of our history. Long ago, this Dzong was built to protect us from invasions from Tibet. It was a symbol of our strength and courage. Though it was damaged by fire in the past, when you stand among the ruins, you can still imagine its former power. And on a clear day, from Drukgyel Dzong, you will be blessed with a magnificent view of Jomolhari mountain, one of the highest and most sacred peaks in Bhutan.
- National Museum of Bhutan (Ta Dzong): A Treasure House of Bhutanese Culture
To truly understand and appreciate our Bhutanese culture, we encourage you to visit the National Museum, located in Ta Dzong, the round watchtower. Here, you will discover so many beautiful and important things that represent Bhutan. You will see our traditional art, religious items that are very sacred to us, our beautiful textiles, and weapons from our history. For anyone who wishes to learn more about Bhutan and what makes us unique, the National Museum is a wonderful place to spend time.
